In-person care

Bring the question into the room.

What will the visit help settle?

Use the visit to ask about the problem.

An in-person visit means meeting the person assessing you in a room. Before paying, find out whether the person is a doctor, a nurse or another health professional, and what is included in the visit.

A clinician is the doctor, nurse or other health professional who assesses or treats you.

Describe the change that brought you there. Ask what the clinician wants to learn from your history and an exam.

Ask what a test would change.

Medical boards are state bodies that license doctors and can take action over their conduct.

As of September 2026, advice from the national group for medical boards says the doctor must provide or arrange any needed test or exam. [A]

A referral means being sent to another clinician or service for part of the assessment.

  • What question does this test answer?
  • How would the result change the plan?
  • Who explains the findings to me?
  • Is the test included in the quoted price?

Check the person as well as the setting.

State medical boards publish doctors’ licence status and public disciplinary records. [B]

The absence of public discipline does not rate a clinician’s skill. [B]

Use the medical-board directory to find the state’s record. Match the name to the person due to assess you.

Find a state medical board

Pin down the next conversation.

Before leaving, ask who explains test results, who handles medicine questions and how the next review is arranged.

Write down what would prompt a change of plan. Ask for a way to raise a concern between visits.
