Who assesses you, and where are you?
Your location during the visit matters.
Telehealth means care through a screen, phone or online exchange instead of meeting in a room.
HHS stands for US Department of Health and Human Services.
As of September 2026, HHS says a health professional needs a licence or other legal permission to treat you in the state you are in when the visit takes place. [A]
Ask which state permission covers the visit. Give the place you will actually be, even if you are travelling.
Know who is making the care decision.
A clinician is the doctor, nurse or other health professional who assesses or treats you.
Medical boards are state bodies that license doctors and can take action over their conduct.
The national group for medical boards advises services to confirm your location and give you the clinician’s name and qualifications. [B]
Ask for the person’s name, job and licence details before the visit.
Find the state board to check a doctorThat directory covers doctors’ licensing boards, rather than every kind of health professional. [B]
Ask where a needed exam would happen.
As of September 2026, the group’s advice says the doctor must arrange a needed test or send you to someone who can provide it. [B]
A remote booking does not answer that practical question. Ask who arranges the next step and how the results reach the clinician.
Find out who makes the medicine, too.
FDA, short for Food and Drug Administration, is the US agency that reviews drug products.
FDA points out that online patients may be unsure who prepared their medicine made to order. [C]
For a made-to-order medicine, ask for the pharmacy’s full name, then check the state’s pharmacy record.
